Today I posted on Hattie’s Blog all of her Memorial/Decoration Day diary entries (1920-1958), including the 1933 entry on which last week’s flash narrative was based. Hattie was the daughter of a Civil War veteran (who lied about his age so as to enlist), the wife of a World War I veteran, and a member of the Rosebud Sioux Tribe. Her respect for the traditions of the holiday were obvious throughout her life.
For history buffs, the following nine-minute video of Memorial Day, 1920 in Cornwall, New York, gives a sense of the ceremonies, dress, and transportation of the time period.
